§ 01 — THE CLADDING

When Dock Boards Go on the Roof

The dock boards aren’t just on the dock anymore. On the Lantern Boathouse, we’re wrapping them up the walls and over the steel roof — clipped to the ribs with standoffs, not a single penetration through the membrane below. It looks unusual before it’s finished. That’s intentional.

Snowetta’s focus from the start was on making this building feel like it belongs here — not installed, but grown. Wood that weathers naturally, ages with the landscape, and eventually looks like it was always part of the shoreline. The steel underneath handles the longevity. The wood handles the character.

§ 02 · THE TOUR

A quick site update as the dock board cladding goes on. The steel standoffs, the strapping pattern, and the beginning of a detail that will only get better as it ages.

§ 03 — THE LONGEVITY

Steel Below, Kabony Above, No Penetrations

We’re using Kabony wood for the siding — the same material running up both the walls and over the roof. It’s chosen specifically for longevity in exposed conditions, and paired with the steel roof underneath, neither system will give out anytime soon. The standoff clips sit on the ribs of the steel panels, so there’s no drilling through the waterproofing to fasten the strapping. Clean. Durable. Watertight.

The combination isn’t just aesthetic. It’s a layered defense — every material chosen with the goal that this building outlasts the dock it sits over.

§ 04 — THE THROUGH-LINE

What It Looks Like to Build for Forever

The Lantern Boathouse was never about what it looks like right now. It’s about what it looks like in thirty years — when the wood has greyed, the steel is still solid, and the building reads as a permanent part of this lake. Snowetta set that intention, and every material decision on site has been in service of it.
