Skeleton Lake Modern Boathouse

Skeleton Lake, ON
BOATHOUSE DESIGN

Built for the Long View

The Skeleton Lake boathouse is organized around a single idea: the long view down the bay. Boat storage occupies the lower level; the upper deck opens completely to the water and runs the full width of the building. From the lake, the structure reads as a simple gabled form—cedar board-and-batten and black steel, set low against the treeline. Inside and out, every decision was made to make being on the water feel easy.
INFLUENCE & MATERIAL LANGUAGE

Precedents & Palette

The project drew from the tradition of Muskoka boathouses—simple gabled forms with generous covered dock space—reinterpreted through a contemporary material palette. Cedar board-and-batten, painted black steel, and board-formed concrete anchor the building to its site without competing with the landscape.

DESIGN PROCESS

From Concept to Construction

The design evolved from early massing studies on site to a detailed construction set developed with the contractor. The process followed the water: what the building would look like from the lake came first, then how it would work from the dock, then how to build it cleanly in a constrained lakeside site.
